The Most Popular Classic Wedding Songs and Their History 

• Seating of the Mothers 
  • In Christian weddings, the mothers of the bride and groom are typically seated last, with the groom’s mother being sat first of the two and the bride’s mother last. In modern times this part of the wedding has come to include all of the immediate family of the bride and groom being seated.
    • Ave Maria – This song is the most common choice for the seating of the mothers. There are two versions typically used, the version created by Bach & Gounod and the one developed by Schubert. Ave Maria is Latin for Hail Mary and is often played as a tribute to Mary the mother of the religious figure Jesus or just to mothers in general. 
• Processional
  • This is when the bridal party enters and walks down the aisle and eventually the bride herself. 
    • Bridal Chorus – Known more commonly as Here Comes the Bride, this song was first written by Wanger in 1850. It was first used in the wedding of Princess Victoria and Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. It has only increased in popularity ever since.
• Recessional
  • This is when the Bride and Groom exit, followed by the wedding party. This part of the wedding serves to celebrate the new couple as well as officially end the wedding ceremony. 
    • Wedding March – Mendelssohn created this song to be a part of the play Midsummer’s Night’s Dream by Shakespeare. Much like the Bridal Chorus, this song also owes much of its popularity for also being used at the wedding of Prince Frederick William and Princess Victoria in 1858. Unlike, Bridal Chorus, this was not the first wedding it was ever used at, that would in 1847 with the wedding of Tom Daniel and Doroty Carew.
